Pontins Cup
June 2018
A phone call from Bob Tonge, who for
many years was the person who ran the North West Billiards &
Snooker Association and even at 85 years of age still is a stalwart
of the Bolton Association, asking if a home could be found to pre
serve one of the old North West Association cups.
The cup in question had been presented
to the North West Billiards & Snooker Association for the
1963/64 season for "The North West Individual Snooker Champion" by
Frederick Pontin. On the winners band are some recognisable names
of talented players who went on to professional success. John
Spence won the cup in 1964/65 and again in 1965/66, John Virgo won
it in 1975/76.

The cup now on display in
the Heritage Collection
The report of the competition was
reported in the November 1964 issue of Billiards & Snooker
:-

In the following December issue
the front page picture showed the first presentation. George Scott
a famous name on Merseyside was the runner up but he did win it in
the 1966/67 season.
